In my research and writing as a food historian, I have used the contributions of food writers in African-American newspapers. These food writers’ contributions have yet received deserving recognition for the brilliance that it is. I decided to share their stories and recipes on my blog and I welcome your comments. In March of 1970 the 1970s and 1980s Brooklyn based movement The East warned those in their community about their diet. In the pages of Black News they said, members of our community eat and drink too much food that is killing us.   Most of the neighborhood stores are stocked with unhealthy options instead of what our bodies need. We want merchants that stock food, beverages, seasonings, and snacks relative to the health concerns affecting of our residents such as the two biggest ones, hypertension and diabetes, which lead to heart failure, kidney disease, and strokes.
