As far back as the 1980s, the Bedford Stuyvesant food rebel group the East had been warning people about hypertension also called high blood pressure. In its newspaper Black News it reported, African Americans are 50% more likely to suffer from high blood pressure than European Americans and suffer from strokes at a younger age with more severe effects. High blood pressure leads to heart failure, kidney disease, stroke, visual impairment, and more, it kills! Food factors that can contribute to high blood pressure are high consumption levels of sugar, coffee, and alcohol. High blood pressure is more common in African Americans because of a diet high in salt when it comes to seasoning before and after cooking food, consuming high levels of canned foods such as sardines, mackerel, salmon, spam, beans, and vegetables. In addition, the consumption of salty snack and fast foods contribute to higher rates of high blood pressure among African American. The excessive use of pork and pork products in recipes of people African descent is also a contributing factor.[1]
