The BPP leveraged its food related survival programs in various way to advance their goals. First they provided an opportunity to speak with those who came food giveaways about registering to vote, volunteer for candidates the BPP endorsed, and to get involved in other BPP service programs. Second, the BPP envisioned the free breakfast for school children program as providing a model that public or private entities could run with which is what happened; California became the first public school system in the nation to develop a free breakfast program.
