I have been researching and writing on the topic of food rebels for several years. What are they, individuals and groups engaged throughout history in the struggle for food Justice, freedom, radical transformation of the US food system. One of the groups I have been looking at is the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense (BPP). It’s women’s history month so that’s where I take up the story of the next couple of days. It seems to me that subconsciously the male-dominated BPP projected an organization with men at the center. The majority of BPP chapters had plenty of women among its rank-and-file members. And women equally provided the labor necessary for the type of programs that I am studying, food related survival programs such as the free breakfast for children and the food giveaway programs.
