Fighting Environmental Pollution
Courtesy of Brooklyn History Center
The East was a movement in central Brooklyn for the empowerment of people of African descent. The movement regularly published community health concerns in its paper Black News. A 1979 store addressed environmental pollutants. How can we protect our community from toxic waste? First, join movements against contributing factors such as industry, public policy, and for raising public awareness of the problem. Second, consume more fiber and decrease your consumption of fast food in general and meat. Reduce your consumption of fried potatoes, fish, and chicken and vegetables seasoned pork. Lower your intake of sodium and harmful additives and chemicals. Drink more water, herbal teas, and reduce our consumption of coffee, sugary caffeinated soft drinks, and alcohol. All the conditions we face can be improved if we mobilize and gain control of our communities and the food system that sustains it.[i]
