The East evolved out of an increasing Afrocentric political consciousness that came out of the community control of schools movement in Brooklyn, New York in the late 1960s. Students and teachers organized the East putting their money together bail student activists out of jail and built a space to house their movement. Eventually they started a newspaper called Black News that consistently published articles on nutrition reminding readers about their culinary heritage. Our ancestors didn’t build empires by consuming white bread and white sugar which has no nutritional value or “eating decayed animal carcasses.” These foods kill, They kill slowly, They kill you. Our bodies need “food, not food that is undergoing a rotting process or chemicals that should be put in machines. . . .” In 1973 the paper’s recommended book on the topic included Back to Eden, Poisons In Your Food, Meat Eating: A Cause of Disease . . . Some immediate survival tips: eat fresh fruits and vegetables, raw nuts, use honey instead of white sugar in all cases, drank herb teas.”
