More on the The East, A pan- African centered movement that operated central Brooklyn in the 1970s and 1980s. The East is an example of a food rebel organization because they understood that food is fundamental to our existence and in a system predicated upon lower caste disenfranchisement, activist must develop sovereign nutritious food systems that support the people they seek to help. The east operated a kitchen, catering business, and the Tamu Sweet East. Tamu in Kiswahili means sweet and delicious. Started in June 1971, The Tamu sold sandwiches, various types of pies and cobblers, ice cream and candy at affordable prices. It provided members of the East and the surrounding community a space to enjoy delicious and healthy prepared foods.
