By 1932 the CMA had raised the standard of entrepreneurship in Harlem like no other entity in the community. The Harlem CMA held weekly training for the leaders of its network of stores. On one occasion Progressive Grocer’s William L. Butler spoke Harlem store managers on the topic of the three essentials for successful grocery stores. Butler said successful stores have three things: customer service, cooperative purchasing power, and reserve funds for emergencies. According to Butler these three strategies would help CMA stores remain economically independent.
