There is s food shaming scene in the Autobiography of Malcolm X. It happens during Malcolm’s childhood in Lansing, Michigan when in desperation to feed her children a healthy meal, Malcolm’s mother cooks and serves them dandelion greens. The greens are rich in nutrients especially if eaten as part of a raw salad. However this if foreign to their neighbors and classmates. A gastro-political interpretation of the scene requires a discussion about what different sides believe is an acceptable response to eating foraged greens. Arjun Appadurai theory of gastro-politics applied to Malcom’s childhood shaming experience calls for asking: In terms of food sovereignty and self-determination, who has the power to define what is acceptable or shameful food for you to eat?
