More on our Grange Hall food history series. Today we turn to New Hampshire where farmers in Exeter organized a Grange in 1846. It gave them better collective buying and selling power. In addition, its hall provided a space for events like New Year’s Eve parties. Season determined the fare at grange food events. One would see menu items such as home made red-flannel hash made with mixed vegetables including beets, potatoes, and onions, baked beans, sweet cornbread, roast beef and pork, coffee, and all sorts of pies and cakes.
