Urban Farming Solving Urban Blight
Since hearing Will Allen speak, I have researched Growing Power (GP) and referred it works to lots of people. Its work is similar to that of Booker T. Washington and George Washington Carver on the campus of Tuskegee Institute and the schools extension program working with black farmers at the turn-of-the-century. GP’s grass roots organization focused on showing children how to transform urban blight such as empty housing lots cluttered with litter and turn them into micro farms bursting with organic produce and beautiful flowers. The process has had the effect of creating traffic to the once blighted neighborhoods in search of great organic food and flowers. The increasing foot traffic dislocates gangs and drug dealers who don’t not want to attract the attention of law-abiding citizen and state officials.
