About five years ago, I attended a conference where Will Allen had been the keynote speaker. At the time, he was in his early 60s. He is a 6, 7’’ former NBA player. His father farmed as a sharecropper in the state of Maryland. In his encore career after the NBA, Allen decided purchase farm and work it while simultaneously holding down a corporate job. He purchased a small rundown farm with greenhouses on the outskirts of the north side of the city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He had a vision to teach low-income children how to do organic urban farming using nutrient rich soil. For Allen farming starts and ends with composting—making your own low cost nutrient soil which in which you can grow great tasting food just about anywhere. More on Growing Power the rest of this week.
