In explaining the survival events, Black Panther Party (BPP) co-founder Huey P. Newton said the goal of them had been to help poor people meet their daily necessities temporarily until they developed a consciousness that united and mobilized them. Newton envisioned the free food as a supplement to poor people’s grocery funds until their income increased allowing them to access more and better food at better prices. The BPP distributed grocery bags with the Panther’s logo on it filled with a weeks’ worth of eggs, milk, cereal, rice potatoes, vegetables, and canned fruit.
