Dr. Alvenia Fulton (1893-1999) was born in Pulaski, Tennessee. She had been serving as a AME minister at several churches around the south before deciding to relocate to Chicago. In Chicago, she continued to minister the gospel but also decided to return to graduate school in order to study Naturopathy. Fulton viewed naturopathy as an extension of her spiritual calling to help the hurting. Why Chicago? Chicago had been the home of great universities that attracted gifted African-American students. Second, Many African-Americans viewed Chicago as the iconic place for migrants to settle and experience all that Northern life had to offer.
