Dr. Alvenia Fulton (1893 to 1999) served as the dietitian for celebrities seeking to obtain and maintain great-looking skin. From 1971 to 1972 she wrote a column for the Chicago Defender called “Eating for Your Health and Strength.” I share readers’ questions and Fulton’s’ response in a paraphrased format to make them relevant and accessible and as direct quotes as often as possible.
Dr. Fulton:
I have been experiencing skin problems, can you help?
Dear Mrs. K.:
Skin problems are more than skin deep. When nutrition is faulty, this inadequacy is often reflected as “skin problems.” The best way to eliminate skin problems is to cleanse the digestive system and the blood stream with a controlled fast. Then make certain that the nutritional needs of the body, all 40 of them, are met. One of the great undying myths of our time is that skin can be made beautiful from the outside.
