Dear Dr. Fulton what can you tell me about the causes and treatment of teenage acne?
Dear Doris:
Thanks for writing. Evidence indicates that a deficient diet can lead to teenage acne. In treating acne the saying cleanliness is next to godliness is so true because at puberty certain glands secretes hormones which force the skin’s oil glands into excessive activity. When the body pumps excessive oil to the skins surface, the pores through which it passes becomes clogged resulting in acne. Research shows that when teens are given under supervision extra amounts of vitamins A, C, D, E, and B-6, the treatment clears up stubborn acne. There are steps you can take to treat acne too: Avoid chocolate in candy and milkshakes. Second, in general, remove soda and other excessive sweets from your diet until puberty has passed.
