Naturopath Dr. Alvenia Fulton (1893-1999) was born in Tennessee in migrated to Chicago where she practiced. From 1971 to 1972 Fulton wrote “Eating for Your Health and Strength,” a column in the Black-owned-and-operated Chicago Defender. The following are her thoughts on sexual performance gleaned from her responses to readers. I share them here in a paraphrased format when necessary to make them more relevant and accessible and as direct quotes as often as possible.
Dr. Fulton believed that disease, stress, and behavioral health disorders such as anxiety and depression can cause sexual impotency. Often a person knows the cause of the problem and gives clues for relief if the health care provider will carefully listen. Impotency is a symptom of a spiritual, mental, or physical problem. “[It] is neither a mystery nor a curse, but a definite condition which has arisen as a result of specific causes. What is even more important, in many, if not most cases,” proper medical care and nutrition can solve the problem. More tomorrow on Dr. Fulton’s dietary prescription for sexual impotency.
