Fultonia’s Health Food and Fasting Center
Beginning in the late 1950s, Fultonia’s Health Food and Fasting Center in Chicago was a local hub for health foods and natural remedies, always buzzing with customers. Locals frequented it for freshly prepared meals and alternative medicine. The center also had a national clientele with entertainers, actors, and athletes coming to consult with Dr. Alvenia Moody Fulton (1893-1999) about supplements and diets. Fulton had been a world-renowned nutritionist and naturopath who had expert knowledge about herbal remedies, fasting, and wholefood plant-based diets. And while she gave individualized care to every person who walked through her doors, her impact was broad enough to help initiate the health and wellness movement that proliferates today.
