Aging And Your Food Habits
In her newspaper column “Eating for Your Health and Strength,” the Tennessee born naturopath Dr. Alvenia Fulton (1893-1999) provided help to her reader’s problems. A reader asked about cooking for an elderly parent. Dr. Fulton provided responses to several similar questions about seniors and aging. In fact provides enough content for a series on the topic, which we kick off today. Dr. Fulton believed that caring for the elderly “requires excessive amounts of patience, love, and firmness.” After you accept that your elderly parent must eat nutrient rich foods on a daily basis, majority of the problem is resolved. Where no special diet is necessary, the daily meals of the elderly, like the meals of everyone, should include dairy, meat, vegetables and fruits, and whole grains. Its important seniors regularly consume a sufficient amount of protein from lean meats like chicken, turkey, fish and or legumes, seeds, and nuts. Also, consider introducing plant based meat substitutes made from things like soybeans, which are high in vitamin B complex, calcium, and essential amino acids.
