Food Rebel George Schuyler Part 1
Here is another story in our series Food Rebels. Journalist George Schuyler fits our description of a food rebel—one dedicated to radically changing a communities access to food, foodways, and or what they eat. As the organizer of the Young Negroes Cooperative (YNCL) in 1930, Schuyler fits the description. He created the YNCL with the goal of improving the health and food self-sufficiency of African-American communities. Historian Jennifer Jensen Wallach describes Schuyler's vision for the YNCL as an organization that would collectively network black owned and operated food related businesses and buying clubs across the country.
