Fred Opie participated (as a keynote speaker and recorder of oral histories) in the inaugural event of the SanKofa Lacrosse Team lacrosse on October 25, 2013 on the campus of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. African-American lacrosse players from across the country came together for this historic event. Opie played lacrosse at Syracuse University and on the 1990 U. S. National Team.
