Food Markets in 1940s Chicago

In cities, municipal markets provided stalls for butchers and farmers who came to town to market their products. Food markets served as community meeting places. Immigrants from Europe and Mexico and migrants from the south sought markets with stalls from their home regions and met and exchanged news from home with friends and contacts from there as they had done back home. Savvy shoppers purchased produce before market officials graded them and then resold or traded food they bought at under market prices.
