Fat Tuesday Through the Lens of Food

Fat Tuesday Through the Lens of Food

Mardi Gras, San Antonio, Texas, a wedding, with all of the attendant decorations and food, followed the big parade, Courtesy of the Library of Congress

It may have snuck up on you, but today is Mardi Gras a.k.a. Fat Tuesday for those in New Orleans. Historically it’s the day before the start of Lenten season in which practicing Christians began fasting. For many Mardi Gras represents the last day to enjoy great tasting barbecue ribs, beef brisket, and fried chicken. In contrast to Protestants, practicing Catholics seafood during the Lenten season. Lots of people it is the last day to enjoy a slice of pie or cake, for some the last cup of coffee or caffeinated tea. One of the most interesting things is how different societies celebrate Mardi Gras in terms of food traditions.
