The Great Depression and Kentucky Foodways
September is National Chicken Month. We share this story today to inform our readers on the history of fried chicken and how it has played a major role in shaping American cuisine.
The death of Harland "Colonel" Sanders' father in 1896 when he was six forced his mother into the workforce and young Harlan Sanders into the kitchen to cook for his younger siblings. Overtime he developed his cooking skills and years later he lunched a chicken based restaurant idea out of the Corbin Kentucky gas station he operated. News of great tasting chicken soon spread throughout the state of Kentucky and during the Great Depression Kentucky Governor Ruby Laffoon gave him the title the Kentucky Colonel in 1935. Kentucky Fried Chicken or KFC Fried chicken dinners made with a secret blend of 11 herbs and spices served as the key to the restaurants success.
