Pokeweed Plant Adapts to New England
The Pokeweed Plant (Phytolacca americana), poke salad recipe below
Fred Opie interviews artist and educator Dr. David Driskell (1931-2020). He grew up in the Foote Hill, Blue Ridge region of the Appalachian Mountains in Rutherford County, North Carolina. He talks about the pokeweed plant in his garden and how his parents, born in Georgia, used the plant in multiple ways, including as a food source and dye. Driskell would later develop a ink from the plant, which he uses in his artwork. He has spent his life living in the South and spending his summers in Maine since the 1960s.
