Why Fried Fish in July?

Why Fried Fish in July?

Fishing in the River Yeou, 1826, Courtesy of New York Public Library

Historically West African societies celebrated the coming of the rainy season in July. The rain would swell rivers and wash away sand bars that liberated fish to travel to lagoons where people caught them. I suspect that US fried fish feast in July have their origins in West African seasonal festivals.
