In 1971, the Brooklyn based East organization had this to say about the second reason to practice fasting. For those in the liberation struggle, fasting prepares the mind and body for the sacrifices necessary for achieving political independence. Fasting is a discipline for committed freedom fighters. A diet that depends on the US food system leads to “suffering with chronic gas, constipation, obesity, hardening of the arteries, coronaries, ulcers, etc. . . .” As the liberation struggle intensifies, those of us in the movement must develop the “ability to function with precision with extremely short food supplies or, at times, no food at all for long periods. Those unprepared for this eventuality will be our first casualties - killed, not by the enemy without, but by the enemy within - their own stomachs.”
