The Lamppost became a magnet for BPP sympathizers who could afford its menu prices. Customers described the restaurant’s service as outstanding, the quality of the food as excellent, and the price for the experience as more than reasonable. One of the biggest challenges to changing the perspective of BPP men had been founder Hughey P. Newton. He too often treated women as objects to satisfy is carnal desires. Newton ate the Lamppost nearly every night dressed meticulously and made himself available to meet with and take pictures with his largely female admirers while he enjoyed a soul food meal of smoked pork chops, greens, and cornbread.
