In 1971 the Chicago chapter of the Black Panther Party (BPP) organized a “survival week” committing to distribute 10 tons of food to people in need the week of November 29 to December 5. The Chicago Panthers organized the event in memory of Panthers Fred Hampton and Mark Clark who state authorities assassinated on December 4, 1969. Chicago BPP put out a call for donations from black business owner for food staples and money. It also asked local churches to collect money for the event during Sunday worship services. The BPP understood the important role churches played in helping lower caste members meet their necessities such as food. In addition, those interested in making food or money contribution could call one of two party offices located 33 Indiana Street and 2350 West Madison Street in Chicago and plan to drop off donations or for party members and volunteers to pick up donations.
