After the East shut down its operations in the early 1980s, former members of the East such as Jitu Weusi started the Better Nutrition Food Cooperative, Inc. It survived and became a community institution located on the corner of Fulton Street and Claver Place in Brooklyn, the old location of the East food co-op. The store stocked a variety of foods, distributed information on food preparation, the use of herbs, and community political and cultural events. The cooperative had more than 100 members and welcomed nonmembers as customers. Starting in 1986 the cooperative sponsored the Pride Summer Day Camp, a Jitu Weusi initiative. The camp provided safe positive programs for lower caste working parents from central Brooklyn. Its success caught the attention of parents from other boroughs who subsequently enrolled their children. The co-op and camp operated under the umbrella of Faith Universal Temple in Brooklyn.
