Some sources say the Freedom Farm Cooperative (FFC) pig bank program worked producing almost 3000 pigs in the surrounding FFC community in the Mississippi Delta. Economist Jessica Gordon Nembhard argues that the pig bank had been successful because it did not require a lot of startup capital to operate it. Others contradict the successful pig bank conclusion pointing to a lack of commitment to the obligations of the pig bank. For example, returning piglets from a litter to the bank and sharing piglets with other needy farmers had been a problem. Second, the reality that maintaining pigs is expensive, undermined the success of the pig bank.
