North Carolina Council and Easton Carolina Council

Notable examples of African American cooperatives happened in the North Carolina with the North Carolina Council and Easton Carolina Council of the 1930s and 1940s. They created credit unions and other cooperative businesses for African Americans in North Carolina such as stores, markets, healthcare associations, and housing initiatives. Another example had been the Bricks rural life school in Bricks, North Carolina. Started in 1934 which provided training to African-Americans on cooperative development. In 1938 the school opened a cooperative store in 1939 and health program. African-Americans associated with the school opened small retail stores and service organizations in the area. By the 1940s three quarters of the families in Bricks had a family member associated with one of the co-ops.
