In terms of historical memory, the dominant white plantation owning group in Sunflower, County and throughout the south had for decades systematically prevented subordinate landless agriculturalists from learning farm management skills such as budgeting and long-term planning skills. As a result, it undermines the success of Freedom Farm Cooperative (FFC) because the group it targeted for membership struggled to comprehend the necessary skills essential to operating a farm. In addition, the FFC’s Joseph Harris had been the cooperative’s only semi-competent farm manager and he unexpectantly died young accelerating the farms demise.
