Fannie Lou Hamer hope that with access to their own land in the fruit of their work, she could transform the plantation mentality of poor sunflower County Mississippi citizens to a cooperative giving an abundance mentality. The brainwashing of landed elites in the Delta produced a powerlessness and distrust of other African-Americans. It also underdeveloped sense of consciousness among too many sharecroppers and farmworkers. In contrast, the civil rights movement taught its participants to organize an exercise agency in order to change their circumstances. Hamer understood the importance of people having financial responsibility, however access to land and homeownership doesn’t make one financially prepared to manage their possessions. Not enough planning went into teaching about budgeting and other essential money-management skills.
