1938 Okra Gumbo Recipe
January is national soup month. Here’s is soup recipe from my archives from 1938. Imagine someone preparing this recipe to sustain their family during the Great Depression. Or perhaps you’re cooking for a soup kitchen that feeds several hundred poor people in the city of Syracuse. I modified the recipe based on my own dietary needs, adapt it to yours, enjoy, share, and feed those who are hungry.
Okra Gumbo Recipe
Ingredients
1 quart of okra
1 can of tomatoes
2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
1 smoked turkey wing cut into small pieces
1 teaspoon salt
Pepper to taste
Instructions
Wash okra and cut into slices. Mix okra with tomatoes and smoke turkey parts; add seasoning and cook in a pressure cooker for 20 minutes. Serve over brown rice or sweet potato or yam foo foo.
