It’s that time of the political season to return to our series stumping and eating, the role of food in campaigning for public office. Historically political parties used food to attract a large public following. Food related public events such as fish fries, oyster roast, ox roast, barbecues, and more had been features in the South before and after the Civil War. During Jim Crow, African-American had been absent from them with the exception those hired to help prepare and serve the food and clean up at the end of the event.
