Precolonial Benin Part 2

Benin City had long and broad streets dotted with markets that largely women ran. One of the king’s appointees supervised the market and collected fees from venders who rented space. Markets operated in the morning and evening hours each day. They sold yams, millet, dried fish, live chickens, kola nuts, salt, spices, ceramics and gourds for preparing food and beverages, and medicinal herbs.
