Dick Gregory Meets Dr. Fulton
Dr. Alvenia Fulton (1893 to 1999) was a revered master herbalist who served as a pioneering teacher on the importance of cleansing the colon with herbs and fasting during the height of the civil rights and black power movements. Fulton was old-school and formal but a nice and easy going person. She loved her job, people, and helping people. She loved her business and was good at what she did. Comedian and activist Dick Gregory met Fulton in 1967. He described her as a kind person. She would take her time and explain to you anything you wanted to know and answer any question you wanted to ask. Dr. Fulton became popular because she was the one that advised Dick Gregory during his many long fast. When they met, Fulton had been operating a first of its kind health food and restaurant since the late 1950s in Chicago’s African American Bronzeville neighborhood.
