Naturopath Dr. Alvenia Fulton (1893-1999) was born in Tennessee in migrated to Chicago where she practiced. From 1971 to 1972 Fulton wrote “Eating for Your Health and Strength,” a column in the Black-owned-and-operated Chicago Defender. The following is her response to a reader’s question about skin care, which I am sharing in two parts. As has been my practice with Dr. Fulton’s ieads, I share them in a paraphrased format when necessary to make it more relevant and accessible and as direct quotes as often as possible.
Dr. Fulton, How Can I Improve My Skin?
Mrs. W:
Eat eggs produced by organically raised free-range chickens. With few exceptions, eat organic green and yellow leafy vegetables raw in salads or juiced. The same is true with cabbage. Too much cooking destroys the enzymes. And that liquid from cooked vegetables is as nutritious as the vegetables.
If one prefers a natural cosmetic, why not make it inexpensively in one’s own kitchen: Use tablespoons as measurements: 4 of avocado oil, 1 of wheat germ oil, 2 of almond oil, 5 of sesame oil, 3 of olive oil. Add a few drops of your favorite scented oil. Refrigerate and use sparingly. Your skin will become moist, soft, and velvety smooth.
