From 1971 to 1972 Dr. Alvenia Fulton wrote “Eating for Your Health and Strength,” a column in the Black-owned-and-operated Chicago Defender. The following is her response to her reader’s question about fasting. I share here answer in a paraphrased format when necessary to make it more accessible and as direct quotes as often as possible. Fulton wrote, thank you to those who were kind enough to write concerning fasting as a safe method and as a therapeutic health procedure. Fasting is a healing art rooted in physiology and biochemistry. Controlled fasting both rest and cleanses your digestive system. It also aids in revitalizing your spirit, soul (mind, will, and, emotions [including your nervous system]), and body.
