In the late 19th century, scientist George Washington Carver joined the faculty of Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, Alabama. He would go on to play the role of informing African American farmers like the Fultons of Tennessee about the best crops for the soil in their particular regions. He even created the Jessup wagon which brought farming technologies and his new discoveries for the use of peanuts, sweet potatoes, and other crops to black farmers Tuskegee Institute influenced.
