Iowa's WPA Gardens Part 4
This week we have been sharing 1930s and early 1940s WPA food stories on gardening in Iowa from America Eats project sources located in the archives of the US Library of Congress. The following is an excerpts from a Iowa folder titled Special Studies and Projects, Almanacs, Iowa, Anecdotes/facts/proverbs/recipes Notes, Reports, and Essays.
The Value of Beans
We underestimate beans. They are the most nutritious of all the grains, and the most easily raised. They will grow on the poor soil but will thrive equally with other grains on rich soil. In any event they will repay the trouble laid out upon them but they must be planted early enough so Frost does not catch them in the fall. There is always a fair market comparing favorably with other prices.
